Notes for authors
Papers may be submitted to FILTRATION in a style that in the opinion of the author(s) is most appropriate. The following is intended to provide some general guidelines.
Editorial policy and standards
- Papers must be original contributions to the broad field of filtration, separation, clarification, dust control and related processes. The Editorial Board encourages the submission of papers which show the results of experimental or theoretical research work that throw new light on established principles, which identify unsolved problems or indicate practical areas to which research effort may usefully be applied. Reports from industry and from research establishments are particularly welcome.
- Papers must be in English and would normally be of circa 2500 words, but can be longer if the work warrants the additional words. Figures and tables should be included in this count, each one being equivalent to 250 words. Where the authors do not speak English as a first language they are advised to ask an English speaking colleague to check their manuscript prior to submission.
- Shorter communications (less than 2500 words) are also welcome: these would describe, for example, novel research techniques, new analyses of previous work, or interesting aspects of work still in progress.
- A limited number of Review Papers, which are critical assessments of published work in a selected area of filtration and separation, are also published. Most Reviews are specially commissioned, but authors are also invited to offer reviews for consideration for publication. In view of the substantial effort required authors are advised to communicate with the Editor(s) before embarking on a Review.
- Only papers of quality will be published. To help maintain standards all papers submitted are professionally reviewed. The final decision concerning publication is taken by the Editors.
Manuscript requirements
- The first page should contain the article title, name(s) of the author(s) and affiliation(s). The name of the author to whom all correspondence about the paper should be addressed needs to be marked with an asterix*. The title should be in upper case, bold letters, centred on the width of the page. This should be followed by an Abstract which gives a brief account of the most relevant aspects of the paper (up to 200 words). The remainder of the paper should follow beneath appropriate section headings (e.g. Introduction, Experimental, Results, Discussion, Conclusions etc.).
- Mathematical expressions should be typed and checked carefully for accuracy. Where many equations appear, a list of symbols used should be inserted at the end of the paper, before the References. SI units should always be used; the negative index notation is preferred to the oblique stroke, e.g., m3 s-1
- References need to be listed in the order in which they are first cited in the text, where they are indicated by the superscript numbers. They should give in order: Author’s surnames and initials, Year, Title of paper (if relevant), Title of book or journal, Volume, Issue, Page number, followed by the name and town of the publisher in the case of a book. References to unpublished material are only acceptable if the paper is actually in press and if the journal name is given. Where material is not available for reference, an acknowledgement rather than a reference would be more appropriate.
- It is preferred that tables, drawings and photographs are presented on separate sheets at the end of the manuscript and not interspersed in the text. Tabulated data should not duplicate values detailed in the text or on graphs. Drawings submitted must be clear and complete and must be in a form suitable for direct publication; graphs are normally printed in the journal at a width not exceeding 8 cm and so care is required to ensure that they are readable at this size. Electronic versions of Photographs should be restricted to the minimum necessary.
- Where limitations of space preclude publication of detailed results, mathematical derivations, etc., authors are invited to include in their paper that this information is available from them on application.
Submission of papers
Papers should be submitted electronically in Microsoft WORD format via e-mail to the Editor:

A full address to which readers may send correspondence should be specified, including the post (zip) code. The address at which the work was carried out, if different, should also be indicated. Where there are several authors one should be nominated to receive all correspondence.
